Teens learn life lessons at Life Skills Seminar
More than 20 teens attended the Southeast regional office’s annual Life Skills Seminar, held this year on Friday, August 17 at Faith Community Church, Roslyn, Pa. The event, funded since its inception three years ago by a grant from Morgan Stanley Foundation, benefited youth in CONCERN’s Life Skills foster care program at the Southeast office along with young men at the CONCERN Treatment Unit for Boys – Lehighton Campus.
Four speakers offered the teens advice on career opportunities, money management and conflict resolution. Marc Dakuginow spoke about the need to save money. “The best way to begin is to open a bank account with any amount and save on a regular basis,” he said.
Philip Heaver gave a motivational presentation and shared career opportunities available in his field of facilities management, noting that facilities management has career opportunities for any level of education. His most important piece of career advice? “Finish school.”
Dea Chunko, a former foster child, spoke about being in foster care, “My foster parents gave me so much love and support. They are still family to me.” Dea, now 22, earned her General Educational Development degree, and is a nursing assistant. She is returning to school to become a registered nurse.
Jamie Remmey discussed conflict and conflict resolution. Following her presentation she also discussed post-secondary education and urged the teens to “take your dreams and you can be anything you want.”
