CONCERN Treament Unit for Boys (CTUB)  

Treatment Unit for Boys services are provided through CONCERN's Coatesville and Lehighton facilities.

CONCERN Treatment Unit for Boys (CTUBs) are designed to help teen boys change their mind sets and behaviors to help them grow into healthy, responsible adults.

The award-winning facilities in Coatesville and Lehighton are located in rural areas and follow the Balanced and Restorative Justice philosophy. A teen’s length of stay at a CTUB varies but commonly last between 9 and 12 months.

Orientation and Testing

Upon arrival, each youth is familiarized with the program philosophy and rules. Assessments are administered which enable the staff to deal more effectively with each youth. The process is completed within the youth’s first month of placement and results are forwarded to the youth’s agency worker.

After the initial orientation period, the client is assigned to a beginning phase, where privileges must be earned by changes in behavior and attitude.

Growth through Program Components

Each youth is assigned a case manager, and one-on-one youth worker Through the use of a variety of services, each youth begins to face reality and the problems that required out of home placement.

Group sessions are provided. Peer feedback allows for insights into the causes of one’s attitudes and behaviors.

Behavioral Health Services such as drug and alcohol counseling and mental health services are utilized when appropriate. These services include individual, group, and family sessions. The child’s progress is evaluated and reviewed by a licensed psychologist and psychiatrist.

• An education program provided by the local school district provides individualized instruction. A certified teacher conducts classes daily, and GED instruction is offered to those youth who are of age and express an interest.

Social contacts are encouraged both inside and outside of the unit. When the youth begins to display the capability of interacting positively with peers, he is given opportunities to interact with members of the local community and volunteer groups.

Recreational activities are afforded each youth for the purpose of social skills development and exposure to appropriate physical and social outlets.

Assessment of Progress, Safety and Well Being

From information gathered through the use of a monitoring system, youth are evaluated throughout each week. Staff meet to discuss each youth’s progress in terms of general behavior, interactions with staff and peers, activity participation, school performance, chore completion, hygiene, safety and well being. Incentives and positive reinforcements are given to those who meet specific goals.

Permanency and Aftercare

During permanency and aftercare planning, staff from the placing agency will determine the viability of the family as an aftercare resource. If appropriate, staff from CTUB and the placing agency will work toward reintegrating the youth back into the family and the community.

Aftercare is provided following release, to help the youth make a smooth transition back into the community. Placement options are also available through CONCERN’s Community Life Skills program and Treatment Foster Care program.
