CONCERN Treament Unit for Boys (CTUB)

Treatment Unit for Boys services are provided through CONCERN's Coatesville and Lehighton facilities.

CONCERN Treatment Unit for Boys (CTUBs) are designed to help teen boys change their mind sets and behaviors to help them grow into healthy, responsible adults.

The award-winning facilities in Coatesville and Lehighton are located in rural areas and follow the Balanced and Restorative Justice philosophy. A teen’s length of stay at a CTUB varies but commonly last between 9 and 12 months.

Teen boys entering the CTUB program following these steps:

Orientation and Testing
Growth through Treatment
Assessment of Progress, Safety and Well Being
Permanency and Aftercare

Orientation and Testing

Once a teen arrives at a CTUB facility , he is familiarized with the program philosophy and rules. Assessments are administered to help staff deal with each client in an individual manner. Assessments are completed with a teen’s first month of placement and are shared with the teen’s agency worker.

After an orientation period, teens begin a period of earning privileges through changes in behavior and attitude.

Growth through Treatment

Each teen is assigned a case manager and a one-on-one counselor. Teens work through various treatment methods to better understand the problems and actions that led to out-of-home placement.

  • Group sessions are provided. Peer feedback allows for insights into the causes of a teen’s attitudes and behaviors.
  • Behavioral Health Services such as drug and alcohol counseling and mental health services are offered when needed. These services include individual, group and family sessions. The teen’s progress is evaluated and reviewed by a licensed psychologist and psychiastrist.
  • An education program in conjunction with the local school district provides individualized instruction. A certified teacher conducts classes daily. GED instruction also available.
  • Social contacts are encouraged both inside and outside the CTUB unit. When a teen displays the capability to act positively with his peers, he is given the chance to interact with members of the local community and volunteer groups.
  • Recreational activities are available for teens in care for social skill development and for appropriate physical and social outlet.

Assessment of Progress, Safety and Well Being

Teens enrolled at each CTUB unit are evaluated throughout the week. Treatment team members meet to discuss each teen’s progress in terms of general behavior, interactions with staff and peers, activity participation, school performance, chore completion, hygiene, safety and well being. Incentives and positive reinforcements are given to those who meet specific goals.

Permanency and Aftercare

During permanency and aftercare planning, a teen’s treatment team will consider his options for when he leaves the CTUB unit. If appropriate, staff from CTUB and the placing agency will work to re-integrate the teen back into his home and community.

To help a teen make a smooth transition back into his community, CONCERN provides aftercare services to teens in the CTUB program. Placement options also are available through CONCERN’s Community Life Skills, Life Skills Foster Care and Treatment Foster Care programs.
